Thanks for the report.  No, I think that is a bug.

In older versions I might not have thought about this much, but now that
we have options like --ldapsearch which are meant to simulate other LDAP
tools (in spirit at least, if not exactly) it seems silly to check for a
terminal that is not required.  ldapvi should just continue and error
out only if and when a terminal actually turns out to be required (say,
for authentication purposes).

Unfortunately I don't have a patch at this point, but I'll put it on my
"to do" list.
